Tanuki Zuien Sourai Loopwheel Grey Sweatpants

Just a few years ago, the idea of trying to find the best sweatpants for men would’ve sounded ludicrous. Sweatpants were the thing you wore exclusively in your most lethargic moments. But now, the idea of spending time and money to track down the absolute best pair of sweatpants no longer seems farfetched. First, the athleisure movement happened, and everything changed. Then a full-blown pandemic hit, and everything really changed. Sweatpants went from cosy weekend attire to daily essentials.

These Tanuki sweatpants are incredibly soft. So soft that every time you slip it on, you immediately feel ready for being relaxed. The Zuien(瑞煙) is a new fabric we are happy to announce: a loop wheel grey midweight fabric that is both sturdy and very textured. If you look closer you will find so many varities of grey, you will understand why we chose the name ZUIEN which translates into “a scene of clouds and fog hanging over the mountains like smoke”.

These pants are a fantastic option for people who want to participate in streetwear silhouettes without compromising on texture and construction. Or just enjoy some quality sweatpants at home after whatever you’ve been doing.

Like all the Tanuki fabrics, this material is entirely made in Japan – spinning, rope dyeing, knitting, and processing are all done in a small Japanese mill. The pants are finished with chunky blue side seams and black sumi dyed ribs and fitted with elasticated cuffs and a drawstring waist for a personalised fit.

You will find the embroidered Tanuki 二 (Ni) logo on the left leg, two parallel lines in Japanese Kanji representing the number 2. The lower line represents the past, tradition, the standard, peace. The upper line represents the future, change, strength. The red and blue colours of their logo refer to Japan’s flag, honouring their roots as denim artisans.

The Tanuki brand was established in 2016 in Okayama Prefecture. It comprises a small group of great artisans who are passionate about denim and boast more than 30 years’ experience in other brands in the industry. If there is something that characterizes Tanuki garments in addition to its modern cuts, it is the quality and variety of its fabrics, with prime importance given to the best cottons, natural indigo and the application of different types of tension on the shuttle looms when producing the fabrics.
