Tanuki NSMT Natural Black Sumi Overdye Tapered Jeans

We are happy to introduce the new Tanuki BluePrint series. The blueprint series consists of 3 different treatments: Acid Wash, Stone Wash and Black Sumi Overdye.

This beautiful sumi overdye uses as a base the brand’s popular Natural Indigo fabric. Tanuki opted for their Natural Indigo fabric because it takes better the overdye. The fabric has been rope-dyed by the only mill in Japan able to do this type of natural indigo fabric and used special organic natural indigo from India that cannot be found anywhere else in the Japanese denim industry. This fabric is exclusive in many ways. Made with a low-tension weave, the denim is rich in slub and fuzziness on the surface to rival the beautiful blue of natural indigo.

Overdyed black colourway does its bit to bring into the contemporary realm in cool, laid-back style. Dyed with Sumi (Japanese black ink), these jeans will fade lovely over time to an indigo-grey tone. As many of you probably know, there aren’t too many sumi fabrics because the ink is quite expensive and not many workshops around the globe can do it. In addition, it is time-consuming and requires a lot of expertise in dyeing techniques.

The jeans are made with all the superior-quality Tanuki details such as copper hardware, Tanuki logo embroidered back pocket detail, and the iconic Tanuki custom vegetable-tanned deerskin leather patch. The stitching for this one is quite remarkable: A variety of contrasting electric blue threads which really stand out.

The cut is a modern tapered fit, simple taper from the knee down with a close leg opening, still offering plenty of room in the thigh and top block with a mid-rise.

Near the back pocket, there is the embroidered Tanuki 二 (Ni) logo, two parallel lines in Japanese Kanji representing the number 2. The lower line represents the past, tradition, the standard, peace. The upper line represents the future, change, strength. The red and blue colours of their logo refer to Japan’s flag, honouring their roots as denim artisans.

The Tanuki brand was established in 2016 in Okayama Prefecture. It comprises a small group of great artisans who are passionate about denim and boast more than 30 years’ experience in other brands in the industry. If there is something that characterizes Tanuki garments in addition to its modern cuts, it is the quality and variety of its fabrics, with prime importance given to the best cottons, natural indigo and the application of different types of tension on the shuttle looms when producing the fabrics.
